How do you solve overflowing toilets during game day at the Gabba stadium?

Overflowing toilets during event is a nightmare problem at any venues and nobody was keen to solve it until now!

The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as the Gabba, a major sports stadium in Brisbane (Australia), has decided to tackle the toilets problem with the Internet of Things and with the help of a Young ICT Explorers team from East Brisbane State School: “Lavatory Urinited”, as part of the yearly competition taking place at the University of Queensland in August 2018.










The Internet of Things solution was not straight forward for the students as they had to learn about IoT and plenty of technical aspects (hardware, sensors, connectivity, platform) and it took them 3 terms to make it work: The demo version was made of a Thinxtra Xkit, Sigfox connectivity, and a mix of capacitive sensors mounted on the exterior of the bowl as well as an opening/closing valve actuator.

The dedicated team was led and supported by Greg Smyth, an engineer with a keen interest on IoT.

The team was clearly on a mission to stop blocked toilets overflowing, making a better life for patrons and the onsite cleaners during events. The whole idea is that cleaners could react in real time via an App alert to close or fix the potential defective toilets.

Following the positive trial, the team will work with the Gabba stadium to make it more integrated. The stadium could be the first venue to implement such unique “disruptive” solution.

So next time you drink that beer at the stadium, at some point, you might want to go visit the toilets and look under the bowl.
