How SGP.32 IoT eSIMs Change the Game

For most of IoT’s history, connectivity was a manufacturing decision. You fitted a SIM, committed to a carrier and guessed your markets before a single unit shipped. Guess wrong, and you built a second SKU.

An SGP.32 eSIM changes that. In July 2026, our partner Soracom moved its SGP.32-compatible IoT eSIMs and Connectivity Hypervisor from pre-order to general availability. One SIM can now hold multiple carrier profiles, and you choose the carrier, plan and region in software, even for a fleet that is already in the field.

Add Coverage and Carriers on Your Own Terms

With an SGP.32 eSIM and Connectivity Hypervisor, you can manage carrier profiles over the air on devices that are already deployed:

  • Add carrier profiles: purchase and download profiles over the air to devices already in the field.
  • Switch the active profile: choose which profile a SIM uses, on your schedule, with no firmware change.
  • Drop what you don’t need: cancel a profile when a device leaves a market.
  • Stay connected with fallback: built-in Soracom-profile fallback keeps a device online when a target profile is unavailable.

Connectivity Hypervisor also provides an API for remote SIM provisioning and works with Soracom’s automation services. That means profile changes can be automated based on deployment region, regulatory requirement or application need.

Ship One SKU. Decide Carriers Later.

Before SGP.32, the carrier decision was made at the factory, before you knew where each device would end up.

Connectivity Hypervisor moves that decision into software. You ship one device, then add the right carrier profile once you know where it’s going. Because one SKU can be manufactured and shipped worldwide, profiles can be switched in the field as deployments cross borders.

The result is a device that activates through Soracom on day one and can add and remove profiles throughout its life. It is future-proof, and there is no need to prepare different SKUs for different markets.

Meet Local Rules Without a New Build

Some countries limit permanent roaming or require a local carrier. With an SGP.32 eSIM, you can push a local profile to devices that are already in the field while keeping procurement single-source.

No site visit. No firmware change. No second SKU.

Keep Carrier Control on Your Side

You choose the profile, not the factory. You decide which profile each SIM uses, including third-party carrier profiles layered on top of your Soracom profile, and that choice can change as your needs do. Carriers earn the business.

The SIM doesn’t switch carriers on its own. You, or an orchestration rule you set up, trigger the change. The platform sends the command and the SIM carries it out.

Two points are worth planning for:

  • Platform features: a third-party profile doesn’t automatically include Soracom features such as Beam or Virtual Private Gateway (VPG) unless that carrier has been integrated.
  • Fallback: fallback is to the Soracom profile specifically, not automatic failover across every carrier you load.

For official Soracom partner operator profiles integrated with the Soracom platform, you still get SIM lifecycle management, data usage monitoring and fleet tools such as tags and groups, the same as native Soracom profiles.

What Is an SGP.32 eSIM?

SGP.32 is the GSMA’s remote SIM provisioning standard for IoT. It lets you download, switch and manage carrier profiles on deployed devices over the air, using standard eUICC, eIM and SM-DP+ components.

It addresses the limits of the two standards that came before it:

  • SGP.02 was designed largely for automotive, but kept carriers in control of provisioning.
  • SGP.22, the consumer eSIM standard for phones and wearables, moved control to the device owner but assumes a screen and user opt-in.
  • SGP.32 supports headless, always-on devices and gives enterprises carrier-independent control over which profiles run and when, managed at scale through an eSIM IoT Manager (eIM).

Adopting it doesn’t mean rewriting device firmware. The eSIM carries Soracom’s built-in IoT Profile Assistant (IPAe), so you change to the SGP.32 SIM, leave your firmware alone and manage profiles over the air.

Who Benefits Most from an SGP.32 eSIM?

SGP.32 is designed for devices that can’t rely on physical SIM access or a user interface. For products with long service lives, the shift from carrier-controlled to owner-controlled provisioning has become a common requirement in enterprise and automotive procurement. That includes:

  • Utilities: smart meters in hard-to-reach locations
  • Energy and e-mobility: EV chargers and solar or battery systems
  • Logistics and transport: vehicles and asset trackers that cross borders
  • Retail and payments: payment terminals shipped to merchants in many regions
  • Healthcare: connected medical devices that must stay online
